Aloha everyone! I just got a new kitten! His name is Rajah and he's adorable! He looks like a little racoon! He's seven months and I'm wondering how much food to give him. I don't want to over feed him. Does anyone know the right amount as in a cup, half a cup or what not? And do you find some cat breeds are more talkative than others? I want Rajah to meow more and I'm hoping he will as he gets older. I love him to pieces though. He's truly blessed my life.
Yes, some cat breeds are more talkative than others. I think Siamese are known for being the most talkative ones, but I'm sure there are others. A lot may come down to a cat's personality though, and that will show itself more as Rajah gets older.
As far as how much to feed him, most cat foods have instructions on the outside of the bag. So it'll say for example, if your cat weighs so many pounds, feed him/her this given amount. If you're unable to read it, I'd suggest having someone read the bag for you, and tell you what it says is the right amount for your kitten. Or perhaps you could call your veterinarian and have them tell you. Each cat is different, depending on age, health, and weight, so I doubt you'll get a consistent answer here on the boards.
Aloha! Thanks! I really appreciate it!
Hmm I thought people just put the bowl out, kept it loaded up with food, and cats regulated themselves. Then again, that was when my parents had cats in the 70s and 80s, and Friskies Cat food was seen as OK cat food for them. So, what's a guy know? lol
Anyway you could see if the DirectionsForMe.org website has instructions for your cat's food.
Leo, some cats can totally free feed like that, and regulate their own eating. Others, though, will get overweight that way. Again, all depends on the cat.
Max seems to do that. I can sometimes put food in his bowl, not even fill it up all the way, and almost two days later there'll stil be a little food left.
My first cat Shadow was very good at regulating his own eating. I could just fill the bowl, and he'd nibble whenever he wanted. My second cat Emma did not regulate herself nearly as well. If I just left a bowlful of food out, she'd eat it in a short time. She was starting to get too overweight according to her vet, so then I started feeding her specific portions, and that fixed the issue.
Awesome! I got it straightened out. Mahalo, thank you for all your help!
My brother's cat Wedge is one of those cats who never learned to regulate herself. Thanks probably to my brother and his college roommates. Anytime Wedge would meow they'd fill her bowl up and she'd wolf it down. At last count she weighed almost 30 pounds and that wasn't all that long ago. She's about fourteen or fifteen now.
